Dear Nora
The New Year CDEP - Magic Marker
Equal parts Liz Phair and Sixties girl group, the eleven
songs that comprise The New Year EP have a warmth and
depth that many “professional” records have yet
to capture. Katy Davidson normally writes all the Dear Nora
material without the band, but this time around she recorded
it all at home on a portable eight-track recorder. Arrangements
are minimal. Her gentle voice mingles with a teapot’s
whistle and background chatter, subtly drawing you in. This
orchestration of everyday sounds with composed material lends
Dear Nora a rare intimacy, one that places The New Year
EP well ahead of the rest of the Do-it-yourself pack. (Robb
