Death of Marat

The Shattered CD - Satellite Transmissions

Finding their way out of the desert heat and barren dirt of central Arizona long enough to produce their frigidly cool style of art-pop prog-punk with near perfection, Death Of Marat are one of the most exciting bands around today fashioning modern punk with classic post-punk/new wave. Using soothing, rambling vocal melodies; screeching, spiraling guitars; and propulsive, gunshot percussion, they create a hypnotic yet scathing sound on The Shattered, full of bits of intense introspection, melancholy and angry moods, and cascading melody.

Death Of Marat embrace the cool, delicately abrasive, somber chill of Joy Division and early Cure. And, like Sonic Youth and Unwound, they possess a knack for balancing off-kilter musicianship with catchy hooks and chugging beats. The trio moves smartly from tangles of arty noise to stretches of grace, often sounding distant and remote while seeking to capture social frustrations and the plight of desperate youth through powerful, abstract imagery. But, despite the cold exterior and the algebraic shifts and progressions of their songs, Death Of Marat bring it all off with startling vigor and passion.

Death Of Marat are hardly ear challenging, though, and there is something amidst their music that is appealing for nearly anyone: punk, hardcore, new wave, goth, post-rock, mod, avant-garde. The group’s debut album, The Shattered, is a dark and compelling record that is simply fascinating.
