"Seven Times Over Fold" LP (Skyscraper #1)
This is an amazing record packed with seven powerful and dark
songs that address serious issues. The music is full of energy
surges, heavy and raw guitars, and an eerie chaos that lurks
beneath the noise. And the driving power of this record, going
from slow to mid-tempo, would not be complete without the harsh,
screamed vocals. I have been told that Surface are one of the
best new school bands to emerge in the past five years and I
only wish that more people could hear them to agree.
Surface - "Seven Times
Over Fold" LP (HeartattaCk)
Metal up your ass! Don't be fooled, this is pure mosh mania!
Not even metalized hardcore gone to its worst, but worshippers
of the awful metal god himself! I don't even know what hardcore
bands to come this to, it is so metal! Maybe an amateur Starkweather?
Surface has pretty rad screamy vocals, and because their music
is so mid-tempo and heavily oriented around chugging rhythms
(as opposed to melodies) they can switch from almost any part
in a song to any other part only sounding a little "glued
together", if you know what I mean. Some slower transitions
are rad, but I tell you, beware the beast!
Surface - "Seven Times
Over Fold" CD (Skyscraper #2)
Surface made an effort to create something heavy and raw, the
result being these songs. Imagine taking a raging, chaotic metal
hardcore sound and mixing it with strained screaming vocals.
Some parts are extremely fast while others are slow and driving.
Also, unlike many bands today, the lyrics address serious issues
such as sexism, racism, and child abuse. My only complaint about
this ten song CD is that it is suppose to stand as some sort
of discography yet the band has more live and recorded songs
that are unreleased but not included on this disc. The music
is great but I don't think this record was needed since these
songs are still available on their original vinyl formats.
Surface - "Posthumous"
7" (HeartattaCk)
I wasn't expecting too much from this 7" since Surface
never really materialized into the kind of band that I would
normally get into. However, this two-song 7" is quite good.
The songs are well done with plenty of drive and power, and
the singing is perfectly harsh without being crusty. They do
a little of the emotive thing, but combined with a little metal
and some groovin' moshy influences. I'll keep this one, and
I might even go back to their LP to see if that is equally as
good.
Surface - "Seven Times
Over Fold" LP (Medium Mailorder)
I'm half way through the first side of this record, and I'm
trying to conjure up the right words to describe this band;
but the band is more complex than a few descriptive words. One
thing is for sure though, Surface has created a twelve-inch
vinyl full of uncontrolled surges of energy along with a dark,
untainted chaos that lurks beneath the noise. In an effort to
create something heavy and raw, Surface have taken the simple
notion of releasing frustrations through playing music and have
combined it with some metal. The outcome - well, let's just
say it's not for the weak at heart. Some parts are so unbelievably
fast it hurts to listen too closely, while others are slow and
driving with inspiring vocals. During the entire record, the
vocals are screamed in a strained and angry tone. I'm sure that
fans of Jihad, Converge, Stick Figure Carousel, and Channel
would dig this. This is simply an amazing record.
Surface - "Seven Times
Over Fold" LP (Very Distribution)
This California band mesh a mix of styles. Imagine taking the
abrasive San Diego sound and mixing it with a more metal sound,
with evil strained screaming vocals and chaotic parts. Slow
to mid-tempo with a dark overtone. Fans of bands like Jihad,
Channel, and Gehenna will love this.
Surface - "Seven Times
Over Fold" LP (Schtufff Mailorder)
A continuation of their amazing "Posthumous" 7"
on Catchphraze, this is intense emo hardcore with metal riffing.
Lyrics about sexism, racism, child abuse, and much more. A perfectly
wonderful record.
Surface - "Seven Times
Over Fold" LP (Rhetoric Mailorder)
Energetic hardcore mixed with emotion and metal. Jihad mixed
with Channel? Great fucking hardcore.
